I have my students brainstorm ideas, complete this planning sheet, and then complete the Essay Graphic Organizer. After that, they type up the essay or write it out, edit and turn in the finished product
I teach Science 7 in the following order: "Planet Earth", "Heat & Temperature", "Structures & Forces", "Plants for Food & Fibre" and "Interactions & Ecosystems". Science in Action is the textbook I use.

This is a great opportunity to get your students writing about themselves without realizing they are actually doing work. They work on sentencing, paragraphing and editing skills all at the same time.
I created this to help "walk" my students through the Business Letter format. I have them start writing business letters in grade 8 so they would be ready in grade 9. They are part of my "Art of Persuasion" unit. I use different practice topics such as a letter to me for a free class (if they can persuade me through great writing and follow the business letter format they get a free class) as well as to Mr. S. Claus (in December), and one to their parents. My "real-world" Mid-Year Exam topic is to our principal stating positive things about our school and what can be improved. For the Final Exam students write to their future grade 9 teacher.
I found something like this on the internet a few years ago and adapted it in order to help my students write their essay. I enlarge it by about 141% so that students have a lot of room to write it out. Next, I have them edit on the sheet and then write out the essay on lined paper (or typed) and then edit again.
