Remembrance Day Poppy Wreath
Instructions: Photocopy the poppy sheets on RED paper, and the wreath sheets on GREEN paper. Alternately, they can be photocopied on white paper and coloured. Each wreath requires two poppy sheets (24 poppies in total) and one wreath sheet. Students cut out each poppy on the outside lines, and the wreath. For older students, they can cut out on the four lines leading to the centre piece, to fold the poppy leaves to “pop”. Put a small dab of white liquid glue on the back centre of each poppy, adhere to the wreath.

Question: How do you know when to use is or are? When deciding which of the helping verbs "is" and "are" to use look at whether the noun is plural or singular. Calculate the Sides When Given Perimeter
If you know the perimeter of a square or rectangle, you can figure out possible measurements of the sides by following this strategy: 1. Take the perimeter and divide it by 2. 2. My Family Tree Project
This is a two-part family tree project. The first component is the cover and actual tree, PRINT ON 11'x17" PAPER. The second component is an 8-page information booklet. This project is a great starting point for grade 5 Social Studies Unit 2: Histories and Stories of Ways of Life in Canada. It is primarily a TAKE HOME project as much of the research information lies with parents and other relatives. As family make-up and the changing nature of today's families can be a sensitive area for some students, ensure you do careful before instructions. You may wish to cover topics such as step-families, adoption, and unknown relatives beforehand. Many students do not know blood relatives and may choose to do their adopted or step families.

Sentence Quiz
This is a sentence quiz that I use as a diagnostic and progress assessment. I give it the first week of school, and before every report card. It is done "pop quiz" style, with no studying beforehand. The first side assesses a students use of proper punctuation, and the second side assesses the ability to answer in complete sentences (i.e. rewording the question in the answer). It is a great talking sheet to use for Parent Teacher Interviews and in student conferences.
The March West
This resource goes hand-in-hand with pages 140-141 of the Pearson textbook "Voices of Canada: People, Places and Possibilities". It explores the NWMP's great March West of 1874, the role of the NWMP in safety for settlers, the name change, as well as past NWMP and current recruitment requirements for the RCMP.
Whole Class Journals
This document contains seven Whole Class Journal cover pages, as well as a writing response sheet. The covers can be taped or glued onto regular notebooks, or used with the response sheet (with enough copies printed for the entire class). Each student writes one response in each journal. These journals are great for early finishers or working on during writing time. They can also be read during read-to-self or silent reading time.
Where Is the Best Weather In Canada
This worksheet looks at comparing the average monthly highs and lows in two different cities in two different provinces. Students use a provided website to search the data, and record it on a chart on the worksheet. Students should each choose different cities, then all data can be collected onto a large spreadsheet for analysis.
